What is the drug Tramadol?

Tramadol is a prescription medicine that helps treat moderate to severe pain in adults. It is similar to an opioid and comes under the category of synthetic opioids. For pain relief, this drug acts in the central nervous system (CNS).

Tramadol pill is available in both immediate-release and an extended-release form. This medicine also comes as an extended-release oral capsule. They differ in their functions as immediate-release drugs disperse into the body right away while extended-release structures gradually.

Tramadol generic drug is also available in different forms and strengths with various brand names such as ConZip, Ultram, Ultram ER, and Qdolo. Generic drugs come at a comparatively lesser rate.

Tramadol hydrochloride is the active component of Tramadol. Each hard tablet of this drug contains 50 mg tramadol hydrochloride, while other Tramadol ingredients include cellulose, silica colloidal anhydrous, microcrystalline, sodium starch glycolate (Type A), and magnesium stearate.

How does Tramadol work?

Tramadol drug class is opioid agonists. Medicines belonging to the same group work similarly and treat similar medical conditions. Tramadol treats pain like any other opioid agonist.

Tramadol works in such a way that it changes how your brain senses pain. Tramadol is quite similar to a brain substance, namely endorphins. To understand the functioning of Tramadol, first, we need to know how endorphins work.

Endorphins bind the parts of cells that receive a specific substance, known as receptors. Next, the receptors decrease the pain signals that your body sends to the brain. Tramadol reduces the amount of pain you think you are having in the same way.

What are the pros and cons of Tramadol?

Tramadol relieves pain, and studies show that it works as well as other opioid medications, but people with a history of seizure (or convulsions) should avoid taking it.

If you compare Tramadol to other typical opioids, this drug functions better and offers unique pain relief by working on the same receptors as specific antidepressants.

Is Tramadol addictive? Yes, like any other opioid agonist, Tramadol comes with a high risk of addiction, misuse, abuse, overdose, and death. Adderall addiction is more likely to occur if you keep taking this drug longer or in high doses.

Is Tramadol a controlled substance? Due to the risks mentioned above of abuse, misuse, and addiction, Tramadol is a controlled substance.

Does Tramadol cause constipation? Tramadol does not cause as much constipation as other narcotic pain medications. Keeping yourself hydrated and taking laxatives with prior medical consultation can help treat this common side effect.

Tramadol dosage

Your medical healthcare provider will assign a suitable Tramadol schedule for you with appropriate drug form and strength depending upon some essential factors such as:

  • Your age and the medical condition for which you need Tramadol treatment;
  • The severity of your pain will decide the strength most suitable for you;
  • Other pre-existing medical conditions you have;
  • Other health issues you had in the past;
  • Whether you are an opioid-tolerant or not;
  • Other medications you took in the past or are taking currently.

Adult dosage for pain (Tramadol IR)

  • Chronic pain- 25 mg orally every morning initially; increase it upto 25 to 50 mg per day within the period of 3 days up to 50 to 100 mg; take it orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain, and the maximum amount should not exceed 400 mg per day.
  • Acute pain- 50 to 100 mg orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain; the maximum quantity should not exceed 400 mg.

Adult dosage for pain (Tramadol XR)

  • 100 mg orally once a day initially; increase the dose by 100 mg per day every five days; the maximum amount of extended-release form of this drug should not exceed 300 mg per day
  • Conversion to extended-release from the immediate-release form: round the daily dosage to the nearest 100 mg

It is advisable to consult any doctor for a pediatric or geriatric dosing schedule and drug form. A practical and safe dosage for children is still not established.

You should not crush, dissolve, chew, or break Tramadol pills. Swallowing the whole capsule or tablet helps you avoid the risk of any potentially fatal overdose. Also, it would help if you stopped taking other opioids while going through treatment with Tramadol.

Tramadol overdose

If you have a Tramadol overdose with severe symptoms such as trouble breathing and passing out, call for medical help right away. An overdose can be fatal, especially if a child mistakenly takes this drug or uses it without any prescription.

Overdose symptoms of Tramadol may include pinpoint pupils, severe drowsiness, shallow breathing, or no breathing.

Your medical healthcare provider might recommend you to buy naloxone and keep it with yourself all the time. Naloxone is a powerful medicine that can reverse opioid overdose. Your attendant or caregiver should give naloxone if your breathing stops or you don’t wake up.

You can buy naloxone from your local pharmacy or local health department. Ensure that any person caring for you knows where you kept the naloxone and how to use it.

Tramadol withdrawal

Withdrawal of any drug occurs if you stop taking it suddenly, especially after using the same medicine for an extended period or in high doses. Tramadol withdrawal symptoms can begin 8 to 24 hours after the last amount. And, if you do not take treatment on time, the condition may last for 4 to 10 days.

Here is a list of potential symptoms of Tramadol withdrawal:

  • Restlessness, pain;
  • Craving for Tramadol;
  • Nausea, diarrhea, tremors;
  • Anxiety, sweating;
  • Trouble sleeping;
  • Rigors, goosebumps; or
  • Upper respiratory problems

Rarer signs of withdrawal can occur in about 10% of cases, and it includes the following:

  • Paranoia;
  • Hallucinations;
  • Panic attacks;
  • Extreme anxiety;
  • Confusion; or
  • Tingly feeling or numbness in the extremities

Although the medicine is safe and effective for pain, Tramadol has some common side effects, such as itching, dizziness, nausea, constipation, vomiting, itching, headache, or stomach pain.
